Welcome workshop participants!

I finally got all of the raw footage uploaded and the participants from our workshop added as users to the site.  For those of you who were just added, you might be a bit perplexed by your username - that was my fault due to how I imported you as users.  Please feel free to change your username to whatever you wish.  To do that, click on the 'My account' link on the left, and then click the link that says 'Edit' on the subsequent page. Workshop participants are free to create content on the site - from posting in the forums, uploading finished work and creating blog entries.  Just click the 'create content' link on the left side of the page to get started.  If you have any questions, suggestions, run into any problems, just contact us!  This site was slapped together fairly quickly so there are likely some things that could be done much better or might not work quite right - if you come accross something, please let us know.

Workshop success!

Our digital storytelling workshop at the 2010 USSF was a huge success!  We maxed out capacity with 25 participants and unfortunately had to turn people away (due to equipment and procedural limitations).  All in all, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who came and helped make it a success!

I am planning to upload all of the footage taken during the workshop today over the course of the next few days.  My goal is to have it all uploaded and publicly accessible no later than next Wednesday, June 30.  The footage is free to all, and everyone (particularly workshop participants) is encouraged to take whatever footage you desire and craft it into some kind of finished product.  There are some guides and tools on our resources page to guide you.  If you run into any problems, feel free to post in our forums or contact us directly.

All participants who gave us email addresses today will have an account on this site made for them.  These accounts allow you to publish to the blog and post in the forums, and will allow you to upload any finished material to this site.

Anyone else interested in digital storytelling is free to make a account here to contribute in the forums, and if you'd like an account to be able to post more material, please contact me.

Thanks again to all of the facilitators and participants from the workshop today - it was a fabulous experience!

Digital Storytelling for Social Change: A United States Social Forum Workshop! June 25, 10am - 12pm

Adapting to Scarcity and Get on the Bus Productions present "Digital Storytelling for Social Change" a hands on digital storytelling workshop at the 2010 United States Social Forum.

Overview

Everyone is a storyteller, and with the growth of the internet and affordable cameras, phones and other devices, the plane of social media and community reporting is rapidly changing to become more accessible. In this interactive workshop, we will encourage participants to incorporate technology into their storytelling. We will share a variety of ways to use film, photography, and the internet to document and disseminate injustices, cultural history, and other important issues.

This will be a hands-on learning process, in which new and experienced storytellers alike will be able to try out different mediums. The design of the workshop creates a space for participants to exchange ideas and experiences. This space for dialogue is especially important, as digital storytelling can be a powerful tool for coalition building and communication across and among communities, movements, and organizations.

Both collaborating organizations-- Adapting to Scarcity and Get on the Bus Productions -- have used documentary media in their work around water and environmental justice. We believe in: digital media as a vehicle for social change and education, and the power of information once it is made available.
